Remote therapeutic monitoring (RTM) is a group of US CPT codes that Medicare and some other payers reimburse for monitoring non-physiological data, such as therapy adherence and therapy response, between visits. The established codes are 98975 for initial setup and patient education; 98976, 98977 and 98978 for supplying the device for respiratory, musculoskeletal or cognitive behavioral therapy monitoring, each 30 days; and 98980 and 98981 for treatment management time, in 20-minute steps. From January 2026, Medicare also pays for shorter periods: 2 to 15 days of data in a 30-day period, and a first 10 minutes of management time (98979). Whether a program qualifies depends on the condition monitored, the device, the payer and the documentation. Healthnotes, Burna AI's participant app, collects symptom reports for a sponsor's trial; whether any monitoring is billable is a decision for the site's coding and compliance team.
